What Pet Is Right For Me?

Pets require a lot of time and money, so bringing a new animal into your home is a decision that shouldn't be taken lightly. It's very important to consider whether it's the right choice for your household based on your financial situation, lifestyle and time constraints. Before you decide which type of pet is best for you, take the time to learn about different household pets you can choose from and the amount of care each type of animal requires on a daily basis.

Cats and Dogs are traditionally the most popular pets, but both require a high level of care, especially Dogs. Dogs need constant attention, and they need human companionship to grow up healthy and happy. Dogs also need to be walked several times a day. If you want a dog, you must be prepared to wake up early each morning, and take your pet outside before you start your own day. If you have a busy schedule, you'll need to hire a dog walker to take your pet out for walks and exercise, which can be a large expense if you are rarely home. In addition to walking services, you'll need a lot of money to cover all other expenses associated with raising a dog including food, toys and veterinary visits. Having a dog is a very rewarding and fulfilling experience, but it requires a lot of money and time.

Cats are easier to care for because they are more independent and don't need to be regularly taken out since they use a litter box. Although cats are usually perfectly fine being by themselves all day when they reach adulthood, kittens need constant attention while growing up. Similarly to dogs, cats can cost a lot of money since you have to pay for supplies and veterinary checkups.

If you don't think that you have the time or the money to care for a dog or cat, there are many other pets you can choose from. If you like listening to birds, getting one or a couple of birds can be a great addition to your family. Fish is another great option for people with busy schedules. Fish require very little maintenance as long as you take care of their tank. Fish tanks must be cleaned often, and essential equipment such as filters must function properly at all times. Freshwater fish is especially easy to care for, but many people prefer saltwater fish because they like the way it looks. However, saltwater fish is more expensive and require more maintenance than freshwater species.

Besides fish and birds, some other common pets include rodents, turtles and rabbits. Rodents such as hamsters, guinea pigs and rats require relatively little maintenance, and they can be fun to watch. Turtles are a great choice for people who are rarely home and need a pet that doesn't need a lot of attention. If you want a pet that you can hold or if you have a young child, then a rabbit is a great option.

Whichever type of pet you decide to get, remember to ask yourself whether you are ready to make a commitment to caring for it before you bring it home. Animals need love and care, and they rely on their owners to get it.
