Test Your Fancy Nancy Trivia

Do you know Fancy Nancy? Well, if you are a 4 to 6 year old girl, you surely know who she is. Nancy, the creative brilliance of author Jane O'Connor, is a young girl who loves everything fancy. The original story book in the series, suitably titled "Fancy Nancy" spins the tale of Nancy, a pint-sized curly-auburn haired girl who loves to speak using fancy French words, dresses in fancy clothing, and loves just about any else that is fancy. Even Nancy's favorite doll is tres fancy - her doll's name, Marabelle, is short for Marabelle Lavinia Chandelier. Unfortunately the rest of Nancy's family is very plain. Nancy even goes so far as to give her family lessons on the differences between plain and fancy. Glasses...plain, sunglasses...fancy! Nancy's signature clothing is a cow print leotard paired with a poodle skirt, fairy wings, cat-eye sunglasses, leg warmers, ballet slippers and a tiara. The unique and whimsical illustrations, by Robin Preiss Glasser, add to the delightful nature of these books.

In subsequent picture books in the Fancy Nancy series, including "Bonjour Butterfly", the "Posh Puppy" and "Explorer Extraordinaire", you meet Nancy's Dog Frenchy and her best friend Bree.

Jane O'Connor's inspiration for all of her books,, including the Fancy Nancy series, comes from her own life experiences, or those of her family. Every Sunday afternoon, when Jane was about 4 or 5 years old, her grandmother and great aunts would come to visit Jane and her family. "As soon as I heard the doorbell ring," Jane says, "I would race to my room, jump in my pink tutu, wrap a satin red cape around me, and come galoomphing out to greet my guests in a pair of my mom's high heels. I wasn't a girlie-girl, but I felt it was important to look fancy for company." O'Connor was Fancy Jane long before she wrote Fancy Nancy.
What does being fancy mean to Nancy? It means frilly toothpicks in sandwiches, eating with your pinkies up, lace trimmed socks while playing soccer, and do-it-yourself canopies over her bed.

Jane O'Connor's Fancy Nancy hysteria has blossomed into a growing series of picture books, I can read books, as well as Fancy Nancy gifts and merchandise such as dolls, doll clothes, puzzles, games, birthday party supplies, bedroom accessories and of course Fancy Nancy dress up clothes for little girls. You can find a Fancy Nancy gift for all occasions.

Dog Breeding - Things You Need to Know About Dog Pregnancy

Just like in pregnant humans and other mammals, pregnant Dogs need special considerations. And a pregnant Dog is as fragile as any other expecting animal on the planet.

During the early stages of a Dog's pregnancy, the signs are indistinct and unclear. But the most noticeable changes are the increase of nipple size, weight gain, loss of appetite, some vomiting and changes in normal behavior. Some pregnant Dogs may also become more affectionate and clingy.

A visit to the vet will let you know for certain if your pet dog is pregnant or not. As early as 26 days after a female dog is bred, a pregnancy test can already be performed. The method that vets use to test dog pregnancy is by means of a simple blood test that would look for a hormone known as relaxin. The said hormone will stay in the pregnant dog's bloodstream for the entire pregnancy until up to 14 days after whelping.

With the aid of an ultrasound, a vet can determine the number of puppies inside the mother dog's womb as well as their sizes. It is very helpful because it will prepare both the owner and the doctor of any possible complications during delivery.

The entire pregnancy usually lasts 63-65 days. And pregnant dogs often prefer to eat smaller amounts of food in more frequent intervals. The main reason is that the puppies inside the womb would take up the abdominal space resulting to lesser stomach space. It is important to provide pregnant dogs with a balanced diet to keep the mother dog healthy as well as the puppies.

If calcium supplements are given to pregnant women, it should be the opposite in pregnant dogs. Calcium supplements should be avoided to reduce the risk of eclampsia during the period when the mother dog will feed her little pups. Calcium supplements given during pregnancy will most likely prevent the body's ability to regulate calcium naturally. When this happens, her body would no longer be able to meet the puppies' demand for milk. Sometimes it would result to seizures and trembling, severe cases can even lead to death.

Exercise is also very important during pregnancy but it should not be exhausting for the pregnant dog. During the final days of the pregnancy you will know when to provide the dog with a whelping box by the time the bitch show signs of nesting behavior and become very restless. And the sure sign that the puppies are about to say hello to the world is when the mother dog's temperature drops.

Summer Blockbuster Movies 2008

Every summer Hollywood lets loose with all the good stuff they've been holding back all year long. For months they have been teasing you with sneak peeks and trailers building up a level of excitement and anticipation the like of which have not been since last summer.

I kinda looked forward to this summer, as the promise of getting to see Speed Racer or my childhood hero, Indiana Jones on the silver screen is about one of three things that can actually lure me out of my house (fire and the next Dresden Files book are the others). Unfortunately, I blinked and missed Speed Racer, and it's too hot outside to leave my climate controlled home to see Indy. That's what HBO is for. And trust me, the way they loop a movie and play it to death, there will be more than ample opportunity to see them both. Twice.

But this year, Hollywood thinks I was in a severe car crash and now have to eat blended mashed potatoes through a straw while watching the high drama and suspense of the Wonder Pets on Nick Jr.

Wasn't there a Hulk movie out not but just a couple of years ago? I remember the gigantic Hulk statue inside Madam Tussaud's and taking a picture of my husband next to it. And correct me if I am wrong or out of line here, but didn't it also suck so bad that we all left the theater with a severe case of wind burn?

I can't seem to recall who the big villain was in that movie, who the writers and producers thought we wanted to see the Hulk smash-oh, wait a minute, I do remember. It was a Dog. That's right, they injected not one, or two, but three Dogs with green juice and set them after the Hulk. They were large breed Dogs and fairly mean, they did bark a lot prior to being juiced up by Nick Nolte. Hahaha! OMG that movie was awful. No, really, it was. If I want to see a guy smack a dog around, and I DON'T, I can watch one of Animal Planet's dog rescue shows.

And, not for nothing, the Hulk as a character was totally unbelievable. I don't mean the acting, cause, lets face it, Lou Ferrigno will always own that role. I'm, talking about that dreadful animation. It was like a bunch of guys who dropped out of DeVry did it on a lap top they stole from some high school out in the mid west. How hard can decent animation be? A long time ago when Jurassic Park came out the whole world thought they were looking at dinosaurs, and that was with what we would now consider old, aka "cheap," special effects.

There was this one part of the movie, I think it was about an hour and a half long, where the Hulk was in a secret army base in Utah and then just started running and jumping and smashing. He destroyed tanks and planes and bombs and managed to skip right over school buses and flower beds. Then he saw the love interest, Betty, and calmed down and the movie ended. It was right before the part where he beat up three dogs. Before that were the opening credits.

So now this new Hulk movie is out, and everyone is going on about how great it's gonna be. Hello! The Hulk movie is not really about the Hulk. It's just a really cheap way to prep movie goers for the Avengers movie that is scheduled to come out in a few years.

And who else is sick and tired of people saying "Oh, don't you just love Ed Norton?" Ummm, the guy from the Honeymooners? That was my first reaction. I had no idea who he was. As it turns out, he was that guy opposite Brad Pitt in Fight Club. Ironic that the movie poster for Fight Club was a bar of soap and Brad Pitt looked like he needed to be hit with a pressure washer. I know that's not what the soap "represented" but Brad did look really dirty. mmmmm.

Ed Norton. Indeed. Why would you take that name if you had the choice of all of the names that ever were or could be. At least use some sexy or talented guy's name! Or even take a page out of Marilynn Manson's book for Pete's sake, combine two perfectly good celebrity names into one neat original one. If I ever grow up to be a Hollywood movie star you can bet I'm not gonna call myself Rosie O'Donnel or Godzilla. But Rosie Rodan, that has promise.

I also really wanted to see the new Batman movie too, Dark Knight, but then poor Heath Ledger had to go and die. I cried when I heard. I'll miss him, but not for nothing, this movie was so totally gonna rock. It was gonna be Justin Bale's big break, no more would he be "that guy from American Psycho," but rather, the Batman! Sadly, between the early reviews and news articles, and months of sneak peaks and on-line flamers, the talk of a posthumous Oscar, the latest reviews and newest commercials... I'm board of it already, and the movie is still like a month away from being released. Makes me want to see that Dragonball movie coming out next year. James Marsters is gonna play the role of Piccolo. Did anyone else just feel that breeze?

But here's the worst insult of all. Someone let M. Night Shyamalan make another movie. Bad people, BAD! When are they gonna learn? All his movies, all, ever single last one - ALL have a twist ending that Stevie Wonder can see coming. The stories are at best "alright," at least three characters have to whisper everything they say, and not a single film he's ever made is worth the gas it would take to drive to the theater. Don't believe me, here's what critics have to say about his new movie - it has a "R" rating. Oooooo. That's the best thing so far. An "R" rating. So what. Wanna impress me? How about this movie make a lick of sense! Keep me in my seat, at the very least keep me awake.

I can't control myself any longer, spoiler alert - and I use the word "spoiler" very, very loosely.

Here's the thing, if trees were ever going to develop some sort of chemical warfare that singled out and killed humans:

1. NY City would be about the safest place you could be and not where the movie takes place. The Sahara desert would be the second safest place. The Amazon River Basin and Yellowstone National Park would be killing fields, not Manhattan. 2. Maybe one plant, or even hell let's go crazy, one entire species of plant could develop such a power, but all plants everywhere all at once, no, not gonna happen. The animation in the Hulk is more believable.

So, what have we learned about Hollywood's summer blockbuster movies? With the price of gas and the heat, I'm advising that everyone get Netflicks and let the downloading begin. You can do it from the safety of you're own climate controlled environment, pause the movie, use your own toilet, and enjoy a snack you didn't have sell a kidney on E-Bay to be able to afford. That's what I plan on doing. Provided of course no one sets my house on fire while I'm reading the next Dresden Files book. Can't wait for book 11 to hit the shelves!

Cyber Pet Adoption - Great Fun For Your Kids

Virtual pet adoption (VPA) allows your kid to select a pet from various kinds of virtual pets found on the specific site you have selected. If they are interested in a Dog or a cat, you'll get a wide variety of breeds, but you will also get some weird kinds of pets such as exotic and unusual monsters also at most VPA websites.

After you have located a website for cyber pet adoption, you simply have to register on the site and your kids can play for a long time with their virtual pet. There are many kinds of VPA sites online, and a few sites levy a small fee for the service. Also check the site properly as few sites have been designed only for kids while others are not.

The pet that you get through a virtual pet adoption for your kid will necessitate your kid to look after and play with it; for which the kid should be logged on the site. The virtual pet lives in a virtual world online, where your kid has to go to play with it, and look after it. Your child must give food and water to the virtual pet and should look after it during illness. Most sites also have the choice of purchasing clothes for your pet on the site. Your child can also enjoy constructing a pet home and sending it to work.

One of the major benefits of this hobby is that most of the sites are designed for this and they also help educating kids through learning games. Your child can participate in quizzes and play educational games in these sites. Some virtual pet adoption sites provide social networking facilities so that your kid can network with other children on the site.

Virtual pet adoption actually teaches your child two things simultaneously, the first being the liability of pet ownership and the second how to survive in an online world while navigating their pet's virtual city.

If you desire that your child should play in an educational online atmosphere, cyber pet adoption is the solution.

How to Choose the Right Dog Breed for You

After making the decision to bring a Dog into the home, many soon-to-be Dog owners must then choose a breed. A Dog's breed defines not only its appearance, but also many of its behavioral characteristics. So, choosing the right breed or breed mix can be very important to your home dynamics. This article will cover some breed basics along with great tips on how you can choose the best breed for you and your family.

The American Kennel Club recognizes over 150 different pure breeds; from that vast starting point, there are literally millions of breed combinations. This can make your decision all the more difficult.

To make things easier, dog breeds are typically broken down into eight broad categories: sporting, hound, terrier, working, toy, non-sporting, herding, and miscellaneous.

Before selecting a breed, consider these factors first:

1. The needs of your family and children

A family with small children should choose a dog with a steady, gentle nature and patient temperament. This means that Chihuahuas may be as inappropriate as Pit Bull terriers. On the other hand, Collies, Retrievers, Mountain Dogs and many other types of terriers make great family companions.

2. The square footage of your home

The size of your home should be a consideration in your decision to bring home an animal. A large and active German shepherd is going to be unhappy and uncomfortable cooped up in a studio-sized condominium. Of course, if you have the space, then go for it.

3. Your time availability

There are two major time considerations when selecting a breed. The first is exercise and the second is grooming.

Exercising an active dog is extremely important. If you're unable to commit to the 30-45 minutes of daily exercise that a dog like an Irish setter would require, then it would be cruel to take one home and leave it cooped up inside the house. For prospective owners looking for a dog that requires little exercise, the Pekingese, Bassett hound, Chow Chow, and English toy spaniel are all easy choices.

For a dog that requires a low-maintenance grooming schedule, choose a canine that has short, but mostly non-shedding hair, like many terriers. Long hair will require a lot of brushing and washing to keep out tangles and debris.

In short, the type of dog you choose, whether it's a purebred Poodle or a mutt from the Humane Society, should fit your lifestyle and your home.

Where To Find The Top Yorkies For Sale

Any Yorkie breeder online will let you know there are an endless number of benefits to owning a Yorkshire Terrier; however, you won't really get the picture until you start your own search of Yorkies for sale. There is a reason the Dog is known as man's best friend, and that is because no other animal on the planet offers the same kind of loyalty and companionship that is seen in Dogs. Dogs can be affectionate and fun all the time, but they still know that you are their master and they will do anything in their power to protect you. Choosing the right Dog for your current situation and life can be a rather tough task, but any Yorkie breeder online can make a strong case on why you should only be looking for Yorkies for sale and forget about every other breed of dog. If your living space and lifestyle matches up well with the Yorkie, you should not hesitate in getting one for your home as soon as possible.

The Yorkshire Terrier is the ideal pet to get if you don't have a lot of living space. When you don't have much room in your home, it is very impractical to try and squeeze a huge dog in a small space. If you live in an apartment or a small house, you should definitely just be looking for some Yorkies for sale. Their small size combined with their unique personality make them one of the most enjoyable pets to have around the house. Online Yorkie breeders will let you know right away that they are well known for their loyalty and they love spending time with their owner. Even though they are small in stature, they can actually make a rather good watch dog because of how protective they are of their space and the people they like to be around.

When a Yorkie breeder online tells you they are small dogs they are dead serious as this particular breed of dog is usually around seven pounds when they are a puppy. Yorkies have all the same personality qualities as a regular terrier, just in a smaller package. They are very lively with a true sense of adventure, and they will always stand by their owner no matter what the circumstances. If you are looking for some Yorkies for sale today, you should make sure you get one from a reliable source. Check to see if you can find some reviews of the possible places you can purchase one before you take the plunge. It would be a shame to not be able to own the best Yorkie possible and end up with a below average puppy when you are looking for an everyday companion in your life.

At Puppy Match 4 You, you will find gorgeous Yorkie Puppies, an excellent companion and protector for an individual by yorkie breeder online.

Online Grooming School Review

Online Grooming School is a unique video instruction course that teaches people how to groom pets professionally without having to visit a pet grooming school.

My Experience with Online Grooming School

I purchased the Online Grooming School program when I realized there were no pet grooming schools within a 100 mile radius of my home. There was no way I could take the time out of my busy week to travel that far just to learn how to groom my own Dogs (which is all I really wanted at the time). Not only that, but most pet grooming schools charge quite a bit of money, and I didn't really think it would benefit me that much.

When I learned about Online Grooming School I realized that this was a real alternative for me. I would be able to watch each video as much as I needed to develop the skills necessary to groom my pets, and I could do it from home and at my own pace.I was skeptical that I'd be able to develop the skills needed to be a professional from an online video course, but that didn't bother me too much because initially I was just looking to save money.

Benefits of this Pet Grooming Course

It was only after I'd gone through the course, groomed my own Dogs, and then groomed the Dogs of my friends and neighbors for practice, that I realized how much I enjoyed pet grooming (and by then I was getting pretty good at it). The course gives you the opportunity to become professionally certified. This simply required doing some quizzes and tests and sending in 5 pictures of pets I'd groomed myself (I found it quite easy to get enough volunteers for this, because most people are only too happy to let you groom their pet for free).

I now run my own pet grooming business part time (I am able to work around my kids, which is fantastic as I don't need to worry about school holidays, days when kids are off sick, or any form of child care).

Should You Try Online Grooming School?

Let's see what makes Online Grooming School a great course for anyone interested in a pet grooming business (or even if they want to groom their own pets professionally, and save money). For starters, there is the price. It costs a great deal less to become certified with this course than it would to become certified at a professional pet grooming school, and there's also a 100% money back guarantee (so if you're not happy with the course you can get all your money back, something you can't do if you attend an offline Dog grooming school).

Overall this is a great course for those who want the convenience of training from home. It's probably not as easy to follow as it would be go actually attend a dog grooming school, but the videos do make it easy to see all the steps, and you can watch them as many times as you need.

World War 2 Games - A Tribute to a Time in History

One of the most important events in our history was World War 2. Between 1939 and 1945 Millions of people from all around the world decided the fate of the political world as we know it. The allied forces stood up for what is right and just in this world. The defended freedom. Now as the last surviving military members of this era slowly fade away. We are left with an emptiness of information and experiences from that era.

The one way the current generation has kept up with the historical experiences is through World War 2 Games. These games come in a number of different variants. From Board Games like risk and axis and allies to strategy games like panzer commander. There are console video games like call of duty and others. But some of the most impressive are the PC Computer Games.

From Flight Simulations to First Person Shooters. they take us back to a time that we can never really experience. The let us drive a tiger tank, fly the spitfire, Bomb with a flying fortress and even para-drop over Normandy. I feel that these games are more that just that. They are a tribute to what the real men and women did to ensure our freedoms.

The new environment for World War 2 Gamesis the MMOG (Massively Multi-payer On-line Games) this environment bring thousands of people together to relive battles and scenarios of world war two. One of these games even allows multi player unit control. Imagine having the ability to fly a Stuka Dive bomber and have someone else in the game tail gun for you.

Please have fun with these games but always remember the history that they stand for.

The Uniqueness Of Being A Human Being: Something's Screwy Somewhere!

There's just something really special about Homo sapiens relative to all the other animal and plant life forms we share Planet Earth with. Well actually every life form is special in one way or another*, but still humans stand out from the crowd. Many people will attribute that to the alleged 'fact' that we were created in God's image, although IMHO the concept of a supreme, supernatural creator being carries so much dead (philosophical baggage) weight as to have as close to zero credibility as makes no odds. Therefore, I suggest something's screwy somewhere.

For a few quick examples of human uniqueness, of all the true mammals, humans alone walk exclusively upright - we're bipedal critters. Why is that so? If the trait of bipedal walking had real survival-of-the-fittest evolutionary significance, I'd expect the walking-on-two-feet trait to be way more common than it is.

We're also top of the pops when it comes to IQ, and by a very wide margin relative to our primate ancestors, or even the dolphins and whales, not to mention the crow family (like magpies). Again, if extreme intellectuality abilities had some sort of paramount importance in terms of Darwinian natural selection, you'd expect we'd have some animal rivals in whose species will compete with us to be grand master in chess. Alas, no species, other than the human one, will ever lay claim to that title. Artificial intelligence is another issue, but not overly relevant here and now in context.

Now extreme exceptions to the bipedal and IQ rule require some sort of detailed explanation. I've dealt with those traits in a separate essay. (Hint: Extraterrestrial intelligence and artificial selection could account for these.)

Humans come in breeds - well we call our breeds' 'races'. There are lots of other animals that come in breeds too. The commonality between all our animal (and plant) kin that come in breeds is that we humans were responsible for their creation - our artificial selection versus natural selection. That at first glance doesn't make us unique, until you stop and wonder who applied artificial selection on us? (Hint: think extraterrestrials again.)

Facial features: How do you help finger and identify the suspect in a crime? Well you try to provide an identikit profile - facial features. Of course you could say the criminal was white - that fits a lot of people; the criminal was male - that fits a lot of people; the criminal was short - that fits a lot of people; the criminal was fat - that fits a lot of people; the criminal was bald - that fits a lot of people. You could say the criminal was white, male, short, fat and bald - that still fits a lot of people. But, match the face to the perpetrator - you've got your man! Apply that to an animal - say a man-eating tiger or a crocodile. How do you finger which tiger or crock is the man-eater? By facial features - I think not.

Here are a few other anomalies.

Physical anthropologists are pretty much in agreement that the modern human evolved in and migrated out of roughly equatorial Africa and from there colonized the planet (minus Antarctica). Now all our primate kin in Africa (gorillas, etc.) have fur. For some reason we lost our massive cover of fur. That suggests that humans were going to be relatively unsuited to colder climates because we lost our fur covering. Why? Okay, it's hot in equatorial Africa, we don't need fur there, but yet our kissing cousins in Africa have fur but they don't really need it either - Something's screwy somewhere.

Question: Why did we lose our fur?

For that matter we have primate ancestors that live, survive and thrive in cold climates - because they have fur. This time, in these geographies, fur is required. If we migrated to colder climates, why didn't we keep our fur?

Okay, naked (no furry) humans migrated out of Africa and drifted into colder climates too. Firstly, why would we migrate into cooler geographies when presumably our population was low enough way back then that there was more than enough hot (or at least very warm) geography to go around? Again, I think that there's something's screwy somewhere. Well obviously we did migrate towards the Arctic, and points south as well, but we needed to invent, unlike our furry primate cold climate cousins - clothing.

Okay, so at some point clothing served a very practical purpose. However, humans today live in some parts of the world where it's hot enough that clothing isn't required for all or some of the year. Take say, Adelaide, South Australia. For much of Adelaide's summer, the population could save on the wear and tear and cost of their clothes and exist in just their birthday suits. The same could be said about various other geographic regions throughout the world. What prevents humans from clothing themselves in just their birthday suits when the climate is right? Even in tropical regions, primitive tribal societies still tend to wear some form of covering over selected areas of the body.

One obvious answer is protection of the private parts, although the rest of the animal kingdom seems to get along nicely with exposed private parts. Even so, be it primitive societies, or cultured societies, the actually amount of protection offered isn't really that great. It's not all that difficult to do yourself a private parts injury even when fully dressed - unless you're a knight in shining armour of course, but that subspecies has gone extinct.

Well, the other obvious answer is, in public at least, it tends to be against the law - that's what society wants and expects. Though shall wear clothes when in public. Well, something's screwy somewhere because no other animal society has any such equivalent ban on nakedness.

Translated, if our animal kin don't worry about it, why don't you take your furless body out in public minus clothing when the temperature's hot; even hotter; and absolutely at its hottest?

Well the standard answer, apart from being arrested of course for alleged indecency, is that you'd probably be embarrassed to; having others seeing your birthday suit is an invasion of your privacy, so to avoid that, you don't allow the great unwashed to see same and thus, heatwave be damned, you go out in public fully dressed. Comfort is not the issue.

That brings up some interesting observations. Privacy (which is not the same thing as having your own personal space or your own territory) and embarrassment seems to have no obvious evolutionary advantage. That's obviously the case because such concepts are not shared by any other animal life form currently on Earth, and that probably equates to past animal life forms as well. Did T-Rex care about being naked before doing battle with an equally naked Triceratops? - Probably not. Did T-Rex hide behind a tree before doing a pee? - Probably not.

Question: Why do we feel the need for privacy and feel a sense of embarrassment? Where did these concepts come from if they have no obvious survival (evolutionary) advantage?

Privacy and embarrassment tends to be associated with restroom and mating activities. Yet, from firsthand observations, my cats can go to about their litter box business in full sight of me, and of each other, without the slightest qualm. When animals mate, they don't give a tinker's damn if the whole darn world is watching. An animal's gotta do what an animal's gotta do. Further, each and every animal is in a sense strutting around in their birthday suit. Do they look the slightest bit uptight about this? Hell no.

When it comes to embarrassment, if you look at things logically and objectively, the skin around your private parts isn't any different from the skin on your face and hands, so what's the big deal? You don't tend to be embarrassed over your ear lobes or your knees or which toe on your foot is longest; so why, in theory should your sex organs be singled out for cultural attention, actually inattention since they tend to be covered up?

So, there are a few more bits and pieces that make humans stand apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. But, there still has got to be a logical reason why. If embarrassment is a cultural trait as it appears to be (it's certainly not biological) how did it ever get its start?

Sense of humour: Nearly all of the higher animals play - it's preparation for the serious work of making a living. But play itself isn't humour. Humans of course tell jokes, make puns - we've all seen people laugh in a conversation when someone says something amusing -all that's a function of our higher intellect and our language capabilities. You wouldn't expect animals without that sort of language ability and comprehension to connect the dots and laugh. I can tell jokes to my cats for hours on end; they'll never understand the punch lines. However, part of our sense of humour isn't based on language. There are the physical jokes and pranks we pull. Now some animals do have the physical ability to pull practical jokes on their peers, but I'm not aware that that happens in actual fact. My cats could if they wanted to, pick up in their teeth and hide my house keys from me as their version of a feline practical joke. Cats don't play practical jokes. Overall however, when examining the human sense of humour, I have to ask what possible link can there be with regards to a natural evolution of a sense of humour and survival-of-the-fittest?

Blood types: To the best of my knowledge, humans are pretty unique in having about twenty different blood groups or types. That makes medical blood transfusions somewhat risky unless checks are carried out beforehand for compatibility. Not every human can receive blood from every other human. I checked with my vet, and apparently any Dog can give a transfusion to any other Dog; any domestic feline's (cat's) blood can be transfused into any other domestic feline. I suspect much the same applies throughout the animal kingdom.

Blood types might make a bit of sense if each type of human breed had their own unique type. Maybe they once did but breeding between the races has distorted and diluted that so that now all races have all types of blood. Even so, if other animals can get by with just plain blood, just one blood type, albeit a blood type unique to that species, I don't see why humans evolved a large variety of blood types.

Emotions: Nearly all animals show emotions, even many of the 'lower' invertebrates. However, though other animals can weep - shed water from their eyes (my cats are examples here), only one animal, man, actually cries apparently as a response to an emotional state. I'm not sure what the evolutionary survival-of-the-fittest bit is about crying. I mean if you're about to be pounced on by a sabre-tooth cat, will crying make the predator feel sorry for you; put the cat off it's game and save you? Crying might promote bonding between humans, but there's lots of bonding in the animal kingdom without the need for tears. So, why should there be crying in response to an emotional state. It's a mystery to me.

Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC): The number of documented cases of humans, for some totally unknown, maybe unexplainable reason, bursting into flame which quickly kills and consumes the victim, has reached such numbers as to no longer reside in the realm of the paranormal/pseudoscience. What's really unexplainable is that, relative to humans, to the best of my knowledge, no other life form has ever been witnessed and documented as having had their demise via spontaneous combustion. SHC certainly confers no advantage vis-à-vis passing on your genes. You've been handed a Darwin Award through no fault of your own.

Here's a weird one - our signs of aging. All life forms age; all complex life forms can die from old age, that's obvious and a given (however, elementary particles, like electrons, don't age). Humans show obvious signs of aging - greying hair (or losing our hair) and wrinkles and liver spots. It's easy to tell a 20 year old human from a 40 year old from a 60 year old from someone 80 years old. In most of the rest of the animal kingdom, visible signs of age and aging aren't obvious. In some life forms, the only visible sign of age is size - trees, fish, and reptiles - organisms that continue to grow throughout their lifespan. Frogs don't seem to get wrinkles as they grow older! How do you tell a 10 year old elephant apart from a 30 year old elephant? My 12 year old cat looks identical to what it looked like as a two year old. No grey hairs; no pussy cat wrinkles. Yet a 12 year old domestic cat is getting on towards pensioner status given a human analogy. Why should evolution seemingly single us out for acquiring grey hair and wrinkles?

In conclusion, if these traits can not b adequately explained by good old fashioned Darwinian natural selection and evolution, then its back to the drawing board and proposing either a supernatural deity or accepting an explanation of artificial selection. The only real candidate for applying artificial selection to humans to would be an extraterrestrial intelligence. Exactly what their motive(s) might be in most of the above cases isn't clear cut, but the 'why' in terms of Darwinian selection is equally unclear.

*All animals are unique or different in their own way. Felines can purr; bats have radar and dolphins have sonar; some animals can see into the infra-red or ultraviolet part of the EM spectrum; some animals can hear higher or lower frequencies than us humans.

Collie Dog Breed Characteristics And Health Care Problems Info

Lassie, the popular series on television has made the Collie a recognizable breed to many. The Collie is noted for it's intelligence and deep affection for the family.

Appearance - The Collie descended from Dogs used for herding and this trait is still strong in them. The Collie is a wonderful Dog for the household as they have innate desire to safeguard. Some dogs of this breed can be anxious due to its ancestry, however, most are usually hardworking and smart. The Collie is a member of the AKC Herding Group. The Collie can be as high as 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh in at 55 to 80 pounds.

The Collie is an energetic breed and is known for its perseverance. The Collie has beautifully shaped almond eyes and they reflect their perceptiveness. The eyes can be brown or blue. The Collie can either have a smooth coat or a rough coat, and the rough Collies have a fuller coat. They come in sable and white, tricolor and blue merle markings.

Characteristics - These dogs are not good with apartments since they love to spend most of their time outside. A family that is outgoing and energetic, and in the possession of a relatively big back yard would be the ideal situation for a Collie. The breed is sociable and extroverted but still make excellent watchdogs and protectors. They will sound an alert if there are strange humans or creatures. The do bite gently or nip at heels of the young kids to prevent the children from straying in the wrong direction.

Puppies of this breed are extremely smart and can prove to be a handful as they can be stubborn and get into trouble. Puppy obedience classes work well for them and they learn to socialize at an early age. You will need to demonstrate who is in charge and show the Collie what can be allowed and what is prohibited.

Health Problems and Grooming Issues - There are a few issues associated with the Collie. They can suffer from eye problems or PRA. More likely is the possibility of taking your puppy or dog to the vet for jumping from a moving vehicle or exploring his surroundings than for a health problem.

They like to eat, so ensure that the dog does not put on too much weight or there could be medical issues because of obesity. They enjoy three small meals a day.

Although it has long hair, it does not need as much grooming as one might think. In any case, the Collie's coat must be groomed very often to reduce tangles. The Collie is alert and perceptive, ideal for protecting your household and can bring you much joy for years to come.

Why You Should Have a Puppy - 5 Great Reasons to Buy a Cute Little Bundle of Joy

Whether or not you have ever had a puppy in your life, you will know that Dogs are truly man's (ladies and children included) best friends. From the time you get a puppy you will instantly be transformed into a soft hearted and caring person that will surprise even you. There is nothing better then to cuddle up with your family and your puppy on a cold night whilst watching a family movie.

- They are so fun to play with, that you will not have any time to bored and lonely ever again. No matter what career you have, no matter how hectic your schedule is, not matter how preoccupied you may be, there will always come a tie in your life where you will get bored and start to feel lonely. These will be the times when your friends are already preoccupied and your family is temporarily unavailable, yet your puppy will always be there for you. Never will you have to go the bars or clubs again to find yourself some company, you will have all then friendship you could ask for right in your own home.

- You will have constant protection from one of the most trusted animals on the face of this planet. It's a known fact that Dogs are faithful, loyal, and trustworthy and will never leave your side. For years people have relied on Dogs for keeping them safe and sure enough they were never let down. With great senses that humans could only dream about, a Dog will always be there, at your side to keep you safe, day and night.

- You will always have someone to cheer you up even when you are sad over silly things. How many times have you wanted to be swallowed by the earth for something so silly and childish that even your own family members didn't pay attention? A puppy will never let you down and will always be there to give you an affectionate lick and wag of the tail to get a smile back onto your face. And, a puppy will never tell on how you were acting so childish a few minutes ago!

- The kids will absolutely love having company, that you know is trustworthy and not getting into any trouble. Don't you feel that you would love your kids to have close friends but are afraid that they may join bad company and in turn get into trouble themselves? Well, with a puppy, you will never have to worry about your kids doing the wrong things again, except of course making a royal mess with their best o'le pal!

- Raising and caring for a puppy will teach you the greatest value you could ever learn in life, love. When you are raising a puppy into an adult dog, there will be a special bond that will develop between you and your pup. Some people even say it's kind of like raising your own child. What I can certainly say is that it will teach you the meaning of loving and being loved. From a tiny puppy, to a full-grown dog, you will always have that special bond between you ad your best friend.

Buying a puppy is not all; you still have to take proper care of your bundle of joy to ensure that he/ she will be fit and always healthy. You will need to concentrate on feeding habits, getting tips for walking your puppy, taking your puppy to the vet regularly and much more. Puppies, in my opinion really are a great pet to own.

The Responsibilities of Owning a Dog

Puppies are not toys. You hear that all the time. But you'd be surprised at the number of people who seem to ignore this. It's sad, but many people buy a Dog, only to return it to the store or breeder-or worse yet, a shelter!-a couple of weeks later because they 'couldn't handle it'.

Getting a new puppy comes with a long list of responsibilities. A puppy has to be handled with care and respect; it needs to be feed, exercised, trained, brushed, medicated for fleas, ticks and parasites, taken to the vet-to name just a few tasks. Before getting a new puppy (and yes, it's such a thrilling, exciting, wonderful experience!) you must educate yourself, and by this I don't just mean reading a book. You should read several books on Dogs or the breed you're thinking of getting, research online, ask questions to your dog-owner friends and relatives. In sum, you should get all the information you can before making the big decision.

So, do you have the time and resources it takes to care for a new puppy? Stop a moment to think about that. Do you live alone and work outside all day? Would the puppy be alone by itself the whole day? Puppies, by the way, are not ornaments or statues. They need love and attention, just a like a regular two-year old child.

The question, of course, is not only 'Should I get a dog?' but 'What type of dog?" Different breeds have different personalities and you should get one that fits you and your family. Maybe you think golden retriever puppies are the most gorgeous creatures in the planet, but if you're the sedentary type who hates walking and don't have the means to hire a person to walk your golden, getting this type of dog would be crazy, since golden retrievers are very active and need to exercise at least an hour a day when grown.

A lady who lives down our street bought a golden puppy a few months ago. She lives alone and works out of the house all day. So far, I've seen her walking that dog once. Well, all I can say is my heart goes out for that poor dog. Goldens are incredibly sensitive animals that need human company and attention, not to mention the exercise issue. I have to wonder, what was in her mind when she bought the dog? In my opinion, it's mostly ignorance, lack of information before buying a pet.

Another family I know bought a Labrador retriever puppy last year. (Their young teenaged son had been asking for a dog for ages-classic story). The puppy began peeing all over their apartment. Because they knew very little about training, they didn't know what to do about it, so eventually they returned the puppy to the store. I'm sure those readers who own Labrador retrievers will be flabbergasted by this. Labradors are highly intelligent and amazingly quick learners. Did they expect the puppy to teach himself to 'go potty'?

To give one last example on how important it is to educate yourself before getting a puppy, let me tell you this final story. Another lady I know got a puppy a few months ago from a friend whose dog had had pups. I called her a couple of weeks after she had got the puppy to ask her how it was going. She said: "It's going great, but I can't get rid of its smell. It really stinks. I'm giving it a bath a few times a week but it reeks!" Bathing a dog a few times a week? Who on their right mind does that? If she would have taken the time to read a book or two, she would know that some dog's coats have a special oil to protect their skin and to serve as a shield against dirt and water. It's this oil that smells, not the dog. But what she ignored is that, the more she washes him, the more oil he'll exude and the more it'll stink. So she was actually making him reek by washing him so often! Not to mention that she was also harming the dog by possibly causing skin disorders and even illness (it was winter).

As you can see, it's important for a prospective dog owner to be informed, and to pass that knowledge to the whole family-especially to children-before owning a pet.

We talked and talked about getting a puppy for three years before we finally took the big step. By then I was an amateur 'expert' on dogs and had passed on most of the vital information to my husband and kids. When problems arose, I knew exactly what to do, and if I didn't, I immediately called the vet or made research online. I love my golden retriever, Amigo. He's a bright, shining star in our home, a marvelous gift to us. He depends on me and I won't let him down.

Please don't let your new puppy down. Educate yourself.

The Best Way to Recognize, Prevent, and Handle Dog Aggression

There are often many types of aggressive Dogs; you can veer this toward the breed or toward the individual Dog but the aggression all roots from the same place. They can show aggression toward strangers or family members, either way it needs to be put to an end. There are so many ways to stop this aggressive behavior but it starts with the owner. The Dogs rely on you for everything, so this means you need to get them used to there outside surroundings. The more you get them to understand that there are other people who are harmless out there and that they see that its ok to be around them they won't be aggressive towards them. The same thing goes with your family members, you need them to get used to all different types of people and places that way they aren't trying to scare you or get aggressive towards anyone.

This all falls down in your hands if you have an aggressive dog it's up to you to socialize your dog. You should also try and make time to introduce your dog to different animals as well as people. You can visit different dog parks or make doggie play dates for your dog to get used to being around new faces. Another way to kick the aggressive dogs behavior is to take them to obedience training classes. This way they will see other dogs getting rewarded for what they should be doing. When they put to and to together they will follow their lead. This will also help them meet new dogs and new people. The more and more time you spend with your dog the less aggressive behavior you will see.

So next time you see the slightest bit of aggressive behavior in your dog you should sign up for a training class or make a doggie play date. This would be a great way for you to get out more and bond with your animal and also allow them to understand that its ok to meet new people and that they are harmless. Once they get better with there aggressions then you will have endless opportunities to take them near young kids and not have to worry about them attacking total strangers. It's a great way to reward them with positive reinforcement when they do well around new people. This way they know they are making there owner happy and that they are doing the correct thing.

Non Shedding Dog Breeds - Choose From The Fab Four!

All Dogs shed their coats just like humans shed their hair but some Dogs shed less hair than others. If you find Dog hair on the carpet is a nuisance or you have an allergy then one of the breeds of Dog that are regarded as non shedding may be the one for you.

There are a number to choose from. One of the best known and most popular is the poodle. They come in a number of sizes but they all the same breed. The full-sized poodle is a magnificent animal especially when their coat is cut in the traditional style. They were originally bred as hunting dogs. Their curly coat was an advantage when they went into the water. They are bold, courageous animals at their best. They like lots of exercise and should be professionally clipped. If you dislike the pom pom style of poodle clipping then you can let the coat grow naturally. But it is still best to clip them around the eyes or they can get infected. Their coat will also need clipping in warm summer weather because it can become uncomfortable hot.

The smaller poodles may be better if you have limited space. The large ones need lots of exercise. A toy or miniature poodle is an ideal house dog. Their coats can be clipped in the same as way as the large poodles. All poodles get excited by noise and commotion. They can be highly strung around children especially if they have not become accustomed to them from an early age.

Another good option for a non shedding dog is the cockapoo. This is a cross between the American spaniel and the poodle. They are usually good with children and are very playful and loyal. But they need a lot of grooming. This is an intelligent, small dog that makes a good family pet. It does not need as much exercise as a large dog.

The Italian greyhound is a good choice for anyone who wants a non shedding dog. They are a small version of the racing greyhound and very elegant. They have a gentle nature but tend to be timid. They prefer a quiet household with no children. Since their coat is sleek they require very little grooming. Despite their athletic build they do not need as much exercise as some dogs.

A more rambunctious choice for a lively family dog might be the Airedale terrier. These dogs have a short, wiry coat. They are extremely active dogs that love to play with children so long as the children have been taught to treat them with respect. They are very loyal and will defend their families to the death. While they respond to training they are very self-willed and need firm discipline. Like all terriers they are highly intelligent which makes them great pets in the appropriate context.

Do You Need a Dog Kennel Fence?

There's nothing better then coming home from work only to find that your Dog has gotten into yours or your neighbors trash and has scattered garbage up and down the street. Or even better is finding your favorite lawn chair or a pair of sandals all chewed up in the backyard. And there is no worse feeling then finding out your Dog got out and either ran away or ran out into the street only to get hit by a car.

If you do not have a fenced yard or your Dog easily escapes from your backyard then it may be time to install that Dog kennel fence. Putting one together is not hard and will go along ways towards keeping your four legged friend safe. In fact if you have a big tree in your backyard you can build your dog kennel around it, giving your dog shade during the hot summer months.

Fencing for a dog kennel can be bought at any home improvement or pet store and is relatively inexpensive. When you take the plunge and start planning your dog kennel you will need to lay out the perimeter in your yard. Take measurements to figure out how much fence will be needed. Dog kennel fence comes in rolls starting at 50 feet up to 100 feet. You will also need to decide how high you want your kennel fence to be. If you have a small dog that doesn't jump very high then a shorter fence will do. For bigger dogs 5 to 6 foot high fences are needed.

The other thing to think about when buying your material is how smart is your dog. There are dogs out there that can figure out how to climb a fence and get out of their yard or kennel. If this is something your dog has shown some ability to do you might consider a dog kennel fence with smaller holes or put a roof over the kennel. A dog kennel is of little use if your dog can easily get out.

The safety of your dog is the primary reason for building a dog kennel fence, but the peace of mind for you, his owner, knowing that he is safe when you are not home is also worth a lot.

DIY - Tips on Labrador Retriever Training

Labrador Retriever training is not as difficult as some people may think. It is never too late to change your canine into an obedient Dog. The thing you need to know about labs is that they are highly intelligent Dogs. Granted, it may be just a bit more challenging to break your older Labrador Retriever from their habits then it would be to train a puppy but the task is not impossible. There are many tricks you can teach your lab as well as to be obedient. Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed in the United States today and are an excellent addition to any family household. These animals are very talented and have many natural abilities to do many great things. If you take the right approach you will have your lab trained in no time at all.

Tips on Labrador Retriever Training:

1. You are going to want to start out with the smaller commands like sit, down, heel. Then gradually move on to the more difficult ones.

2. Be consistent with your commands and do not let up. Keep saying it and motion for them to do what you are asking until they follow trough with it. Dogs do not understand our commands until they are taught them.

3. Reward their good behavior right away. I you will reward the good behavior you will indeed see this behavior repeated because they know it is going to be rewarded.

4. Keep a watch on your Labrador Retriever so that you are able to correct bad behavior on the spot. Have a firm voice. This will let them know that what they just done was not a good thing. They will eventually understand this concept.

5. It is very important that you keep your cool and have patience with your dog. Nothing is going to change over night. Though, day to day you will gradually see a difference in your Labrador Retriever's behavior.

There are many places to find tips on labrador retriever training. You can search the internet, there are books out there you can buy, there are even doggy daycares you can take your dog to and receive help with this training process. You can hire professionals to come in and take over. This is usually the approach a person may take when they do not have the time to train their dog. Also, when the dog is just so set in their ways you have to get someone to help.

For more free tips and information about doing your labrador retriever training, I recommend this article. This article not only offers free tips, it also offers a guide that comes complete with plans, professional tips, and more. Dont spend so much on obedience school, when you can do it yourself and save money. More importantly, why let someone else build a bond with your labrador retriever, build it yourself!

Noah's Ark and the Biblical Flood: Reality Or Nonsense?

In terms of Old Testament tales, the Biblical flood story makes for a great science fiction read, even makes a grand (but fictional) epic film spectacular, but that's about as far as it goes. The accent here must be on the word 'fiction'. In fact, this has just got be the greatest crock of bovine fertilizer I've ever read about. How any thinking person can swallow this fairy tale is beyond me. Just consider.

Where did all the water come from? There's certainly not enough water vapour in the atmosphere to precipitate out for 40 days and nights! And would 40 days and nights of rain even be enough to cover the highest mountain peak? I doubt it. And where did all the water go after-the-fact?

Then there's that minor detail of actually building the Ark. Given the size it would have to be (room for all those multi-tens-of-thousands of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and millions more invertebrates), just using a very few labourers without modern power tools, it would have to take decades, if not centuries to complete the task. And that's after you have gathered all of the raw materials and transported them on site. From an engineering point of view, there is a limit to how big you can make a viable, sailable wooden boat using only materials and technology available at the time. Too large, as the Ark would have to be, it would at best leak and slowly sink; at worst break apart and rapidly sink, sailing on a rough and stormy global sea. With no land masses to get in the way, can you imagine the force the winds could get to? Cape Horn would be a smooth pond comparatively speaking.

After taking mega-years to build the damn ship, your work isn't finished. Somehow you have got to find, collect, gather together all the supplies needed as well as find, collect and gather all the animals required for the voyage. That would take quite some considerable time - as in more mega-years. How long would it take you to round up two of every animal species on Planet Earth along with all the resources required to keep them in the style of life to which they have become accustomed for forty days and nights? Don't forget that many animals have very precise dietary, etc. requirements. I think most pet owners find it quite daunting enough to deal with the time and energy to look after just a few animals, far less several hundred thousand!

And just how did all those thousands of species of animals not native to the region happen to make it to the Ark if they weren't collected by Noah and friends? I mean like polar bears and penguins and animals native to the Americas? I assume koalas and kangaroos went along for the ride. How did they get to the Holy Lands? How did these animals get returned to their native lands after-the-fact?

There are the logistical and manpower issues that need to be looked at after the building and gathering together aspects. There's the need to load and store all those supplies for the adequate care and feeding of at minimum a hundred thousand animal species (times two - one of each sex), and that's excluding all the insects and other invertebrates (so add several million more). What sort of manpower is needed to care for, feed, exercise, clean (especially clean) and dispose of the organic refuse of all those animals? Let's just say that a typical zoo has way fewer animals and lots more staff. Noah and crew would never have gotten any sleep. Since there are only 86,400 seconds in a day, each animal would have rated less than a few seconds a day even multiplying allowable seconds in a day by all the available manpower for said care and feeding and exercise and cleaning. Perhaps Noah and crew were born on and came from Krypton!

Was Noah and crew (family) qualified in the care of wildlife? Were they certified veterinarians who could look after a sick animal? After all, if one of the two-by-two of a kind died, then it's curtains for that species. It goes extinct! I'd guess they probably weren't so qualified, which was a major oversight IMHO.

Relatively few life forms would have survived in a global ocean. That includes most fish as all that additional fresh water would have diluted the oceans enough, and the rising sea water levels contaminate fresh water lakes, etc. such that nearly all marine and fresh water fish would have died. Therefore, I guess the Ark had to have been a floating aquarium in addition to everything else.

And just how did all those dry land plants survive after being submerged for weeks on end? Well, I guess the Ark had to carry a lot of plants too! Of course fresh water for all the plants wouldn't have been much of a problem, but what of sunlight since everything had to be stored below decks? Of course perhaps all plants were stored as seeds, but how do seeds (or the actual plants for that matter) native to Australia, New Zealand, or Hawaii say get to the Middle East?

And how could the Ark maintain all those proper environmental conditions on board to sustain the lives of such a diversity of wildlife? From polar to tropical, desert to rainforest, how? And how could the Ark carry hundreds of thousands of animal species (including nearly all the birds), millions if you include insects (which you'd have to do), along with appropriate food for all, all for a minimum of 40 days and nights (plus additional time for the waters to entirely recede)? Do you realize how entirely inadequate the Biblical accounting of the Ark is for such a mission? It's like trying to house and feed a human population of thousands in a bed-sitter flat!

Speaking of proper environmental conditions, you have got to pity the poor human occupants on board - the crew. I mean between the massive animal stink and animal noise and the constant wet and constant seasickness from the rolling global ocean, plus very poor ventilation and what with no electric lights, inhaling the smoke and fumes from whatever oil-based light source(s) they had - well there sure was no occupational health and safety back then!

There's also a few other quirks. Actually in some cases you need more than two per species. You can't have just two Dogs or two cats, but two of every Dog breed and two of every cat breed. Multiply that by all other species that have various distinctive breeds. Speaking of breeds, where did all our genetic racial diversity come from if there were only a few (Noah and crew) survivors of this Biblical (global) flood?

In fact, since some animals only eat live (animal) food, I guess more than two of some species had to be on board to serve as appropriate snacks. I mean there wasn't any tinned or dry cat food available for the moggies, no means of refrigeration of raw meat or fish, so extra live mice had better be on hand. That sort of example could be multiplied many times over.

After-the-fact, when the flood waters receded, what food would the herbivores eat? It would take some time for the grasses and bushes and trees and forests to regenerate. Further, immediately after-the-fact, wouldn't the predator-prey ratio be all screwed up? I mean in a healthy population, prey vastly outnumber predators. If there are 200 deer and 2 lions, both survive. If there are two deer and two lions, both go kaput pretty quickly, the deer killed for food, the lions then starve.

And isn't it strange that there were no other boats in existence that would have carried other survivors? I mean apparently every other boat in Biblical time's existence sank, apart from the Ark! Rather inadequate boat building skills back then apparently or perhaps the whole story has all the reality of a Twilight Zone episode.

Now God may have a bone to pick with humans, but not with innocent animals. Although God dos the right thing by 'saving' a pair of each species, God also exhibited extreme cruelty in murdering (drowning) untold multi-millions of innocent animals.

There's that concept of murder which God perpetrated on the human race en masse despite his or her own commandment about not killing. Thou shall not kill is one of the Ten Commandments I believe. So you'd think that God would practice what he (or she) preaches, but doesn't, according to the Old Testament. Because the Biblical flood was God's flood, God was the greatest mass murderer in the history of the world, a murderer that puts tyrants the likes of Hitler to a status of rank amateur! I mean there are not only the Biblical flood story, but what about Sodom and Gomorrah? You can't trust a god who basically says 'do as I say, not as I do'.

The logic of it all is illogical in the extreme. And even if the Biblical flood were only a localized affair (which makes far more sense and explains some of the above problems), that still doesn't absolve God from being a mass murderer.

If God - assuming a God exists and being all powerful and such - really wanted to wipe out all but a very few of his or her originally chosen people, those made in God's image, humanity in other words (but please spare the innocent animals), he or she certainly picked a complicated way of doing it. A really all powerful God could have just snapped his or her fingers and instantaneously all of the humanity bar those very few special ones (Noah and company) would have become the dead dust of history. But why be quick and merciful when you can drag it out and make them suffer!

Now the tale of the global flood is in fact global! Cultures from around the world tell similar tales to the Biblical flood. The argument is that therefore the story must be true as these diverse cultures had no contact with each other. My answer to that is related to bovine fertilizer! End of the world tales, or myths, the concept of Armageddon, punishing the wicked with total catastrophe was as common and popular then as now. We all love a good 'end of the world' story that has a moral attached. Alas, the choices or mechanisms available for said end of the world stories to myth makers' way back then were rather limited. They had no knowledge of supernovae or gamma-ray bursts or massive solar flares or nuclear war and resulting holocausts or killer asteroids smacking into Planet Earth, etc. All they had to work with was the day-to-day sorts of routine natural events part and parcel of their daily lives. In fact, many tale-spinners might not have been familiar with, say, volcanoes, and while most relatively violent weather phenomena, like tornadoes, may be destructive, they aren't destructive enough to wipe out the wicked that populate a wide area. However, everyone would have experienced rain, heavy rain, even torrential rain say from hurricanes, etc. that resulted in minor flooding, or say witnessed storm surges from the sea that inundated the land, and/or witnessed rivers, ponds and lakes overflowing. It doesn't take that much imagination to notch up minor real events, in the guise of story telling, to mega disaster proportions. If it rains heavily for one day and there's some local flooding, up the ante to 40 days. It's difficult to imagine any story teller from 5000 years ago coming up with any other sort of end of the world scenario!

The one point to end-of-the-world, mega disaster stories is that there must be at least one survivor to tell the tale! I gather in this case that includes survivors such as Noah and kin.

I have read of one other explanation for universal flood stories. If I recall correctly, a student of Freud came up with the idea that the tellers/inventors of flood tales got the idea from dreams in their sleep. And they dreamed the dream all because they were asleep with relatively full bladders. Personally, I think that's a piss-weak explanation!

Is there another solution? Well, here's one possibility. What if God, she, he or whatever, were in reality a very 'flesh and blood' extraterrestrial (E.T.) computer programmer, who has written a software package called, say "Planet Earth". Maybe it's a computer or interactive video game - maybe a homework assignment for a smart E.T. student. Anyway, computer software easily explains all the Biblical miracles (virgin births; the resurrection, etc.) or anomalies (like where did the entire Biblical flood's rain come from; where did all the water go; how did Jonah survive inside a large fish, etc.) or inconsistencies (like Cain's wife, the discrepancies between Biblical time and geological time). Regarding the Biblical flood, no humans actually died; no animals suffered and drowned, and so on, because the humans and animals were never real to start with, just as you and I aren't real, just part of - for want of a better analogy - a computer game simulation. Now that's pretty outlandish, but probably no more so that actually spending time, effort, energy and your hard earned dollars in search of the mythological and IMHO nonexistent Noah's Ark.

But if you still believe in the physical reality of Noah's Ark., then I guess it is logical to believe that the Ark must of carried unicorns, fairies-at-the-bottom-of-the-garden, dragons, centaurs, leprechauns, elves, sirens, Bigfoot, griffins, werewolves, trolls and just for good measure, the Cyclopes (plus a host of others).

The more obvious conclusion or implication is, if the Bible - the alleged word of God - gets this alleged event so wrong - it fails on any level of logic you care to apply - then how much faith can you put in the rest of the Biblical text? What sort of credibility does the Bible have? My belief is that it has absolutely none. So, potentially then the entire Bible, judging by the tale of the global flood, is a farce - just a collection of myths and fairy tales for grownups.

Is A Neopolitan Mastiff Right for Me?

In the 1940s, the Neopolitan Mastiff used to be an Italian estate guard Dog, purposely bred to look and act fearsome in order to protect livestock from other Dogs and non-canine animals. Being the oldest Mastiff breed on the planet, the history of this ancient warrior can be seen in the time of Alexander the Great. The new generation of Neopolitan Mastiffs is a stay-at-home guardian of its master and family. If you're planning on buying or adopting a Mastiff, the following reasons would help you decide if a Neopolitan Mastiff is right for you.

The Neopolitan Mastiff is right for you if:

1) You want a fearsome-looking dog - The Neo Mastiff is the most frightening-looking breed in existence due to its large head, wrinkled skin, massive size, powerful movements and heavy howling. The male Neopolitan Mastiff weighs up to 140 pounds.

2) You want an easily manageable dog - The Mastiff has a sleek coat, making it easy to groom.

3) You want a homebound dog - The Neopolitan Mastiff is normally quiet and calm indoors. He prefers to lie around the house and requires little exercise.

4) You want a guard dog - The Neopolitan Mastiff was born to protect; he is an impressive watchdog due to its ability to become self-assured and serious in the presence of strangers and capability to obey his master.

The Neo is NOT right for you if:

1) You want a small and cuddly dog - If your home is small or you don't want a dog taking up a lot of space, a Neopolitan Mastiff can measure up to 31 inches long, who loves to lean his 140-pound weight against his master's leg, lap or feet.

2) You want a clean dog - Although a Neo Mastiff can be easily groomed, he has the tendency to drool, slobber and shed.

3) You want a well-behaved dog - When young, a Neopolitan Mastiff can be rowdy, excessively active, destructive and aggressive towards people and other animals. Although he can be controlled with proper obedience training, the Neopolitan Mastiff requires a master who can take charge.

4) You have no money - A N-Mastiff costs around $1,000 and up. In addition, the massive size, innate protective and aggressiveness of this breed can face many legal liabilities.

The Neopolitan Mastiff is a devoted and affectionate dog, especially to his family and friends. He is a born protector, keeping homes, cars and families safe. However, the Neopolitan Mastiff is not for everyone. If you have no money to spare for potential legal liabilities, have no time for obedience training, prefer small, cuddly and clean dogs, then the Neopolitan Mastiff is wrong for you. On the other hand, if you need guard dogs that can be trained, managed easily, placed indoors and require little exercise, then the Neo Mastiff is right for you.

Neopolitan Mastiffs are great creatures. I'm going to reveal a lot more information about their secrets. In fact, let me show you a bit of information, you probably don't know about a Neopolitan Mastiff To learn more about this dog, visit the Neopolitan Mastiff Dog Center at the Mastiff Dog Center website.

How to Start a Foreclosure Cleanup and Property Preservation Company

A new article on June 3, 2009 from MSN Money writer Michael Brush indicates that there is a third wave of foreclosures still to come from prime borrowers (i.e. those previously "safe-borrowers" with sound credit and fixed-rate mortgages) as a result of job losses thanks to the worsening economy ("Coming: A 3rd Wave of Foreclosures").

The article states that "In the first quarter, the percentage of these borrowers who were behind on their mortgages or in foreclosure had doubled from a year earlier, to nearly 6%" and goes on to say that "Credit Suisseanalyst Rod Dubitsky predicted last week that 8.1 million mortgages, or 16% of all mortgages, will go into foreclosure over the next four years. A weak economy, continued declines in home prices and rising delinquencies among prime borrowers all but ensure that foreclosures "will march steadily higher," he says." Not such great news for the economy, but good news indeed for entrepreneurs interested in starting a foreclosure cleanup business to clean and repair foreclosed homes for the banks.

To put this in perspective, this means that there will be over 2 million foreclosures a year and more than $2,025,000,000 up for grabs in money that will be spent on cleaning up these foreclosed properties (since the average bill is $1000+ to clean up one of these properties).

Let's take a look at how you can position yourself to capitalize on this coming foreclosure movement

Set Up Your Company Properly

If you want to be hired for cleanup or preservation work, you'll need to operate your business as a professional company. The good news is that you can set up a business quickly and inexpensively, and usually on your own. Many people decide to set up an LLC (Limited Liability Company) because of how quickly and easily it can be done but you'll want to check with your accountant or other business professional to select the type of business entity that's right for your personal situation.

If you do decide to start an LLC, you can usually find all of the documents you need online from your state's government website. Usually the branch you're looking for will be called the "Industrial Commission" or "Corporation Commission" or similar. Try typing in "start a business + ______ (your state)". Anything ending in ".gov" is usually a good place to start as it indicates a government site.

Once your business is set up, you'll need an Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is like a SSN for your business. You can register for one online: type in "IRS" & "EIN" into a search engine to find the online registration link.

As soon as you have your EIN (which you can usually get immediately online), you can open up a business bank account for your company. This step is very, very important. In the excitement of things, many people get caught up in the day-to-day dealings of running a business and use their personal accounts to pay for business expenses. Not only does this present an accounting nightmare at the end of the year, but it could present problems for you with the IRS if you don't keep your personal and business finances separate.

Once you legally set up your business, you may be required to register your business with your county or city in order to get a business license to operate. You can start by calling City Hall or the Office of the County Clerk to inquire as to whether or not you need a city/county/state business license and if so, how to get one.

So to recap:

1. Legally set up your business
2. Get your EIN # and set up a business bank account
3. Apply for a business license
4. If you want to do preservation work, determine whether or not you need a contractors' license

Get Insurance

You absolutely must have a Commercial Liability Insurance policy and Workers' Compensation Insurance in order to run your business. Not only is insurance essential for protecting yourself from liability and protecting those that work for you in the event of a work-related injury, but many asset management companies will not do business with you if you do not meet their minimum insurance requirements.

Insurance will likely be one of your largest start-up costs, however, most insurance companies allow you to pay the premium on a monthly (rather than yearly) basis, which definitely makes this expense more affordable.

General Liability Insurance policies can cover the following: bodily injury, property damage, contractual liability, personal and advertising injury, professional liability (also known as Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance, this coverage protects you and your business from litigation caused by charges of professional neglect or failure to perform your professional duties), hired auto and non-auto liability and umbrella liability.

You'll want to speak directly with your insurance agent to get a better idea of the extent of the coverage provided by their particular policy and one that is best suited for your individual needs

Workers' Compensation Insurance is required in most states when you have W2 employees, and some states also require your insurance to cover your 1099 contractors also. Workers' Compensation ("Workers' Comp") covers your employees' medical and disability expenses related to work-related illness and on-the-job injuries.

In the states where you are not required to cover your 1099 contractors you would need them to provide proof that they carry their own Workers' Compensation insurance. Although tempting to shift the financial burden of maintaining a policy onto your 1099 contractors, in all reality, you are probably better off to take on the cost of all staff Workers' Compensation (all W2 employees and 1099 contractors). The reason is that it's difficult to find only independent contractors that have their own policy. In addition, this industry has such high turnover that if you put this restriction on your independent contractors, you'll waste valuable time and lost revenues trying to find replacements in a hurry.

Here's a great tip: sometimes you can get "pay-as-you-go" insurance where your workers' compensation insurance premiums are based on your actual payroll, rather than an estimated amount. This is great for companies that are just starting out or have a fluctuating workload. Type in "pay as you go workers comp" into a search engine for results in your area.

As a second tip, we've used Farmers Insurance for years and have always had excellent customer service and great rates. Just Google "Farmers Insurance" for an agent in your area.

Foreclosure Cleanup v.s. Property Preservation Services

As the name suggests as a Foreclosure Cleanup Company, you'll be cleaning out all of the junk in the house (also called a "trashout or a "junk out"), as well as cleaning the interior of the home. You may also be required to remove vehicles on the property. Usually foreclosure cleanup companies are also responsible for doing a basic landscape cleanup which includes hauling out any junk from the front/back yards, cutting the grass and trimming trees/bushes.

Cleaning up the property is the extent of services offered by a Foreclosure Cleanup Company, whereas a Property Preservation Company is also involved in the "securing" of the property and the "preserving" of the property.

Here are some of the services that a preservation company may offer (note that a Property Preservation Company will generally also offer cleanup services):

Securing the Property
o Initial vacant property inspection
o Lock changes
o Boarding of windows and doors
o Temporary roof repair
o Securing swimming pools

Preserving the Property
o Exterior Debris removal
o Abandoned vehicle removal (cars, boats, etc.)
o Interior Debris removal (junk-out)
o Hazardous waste removal
o Interior cleaning services including carpet cleaning
o Window washing/graffiti removal
o Window replacement
o Pool services (draining, acid washing, maintaining, etc.)
o Pest control services
o Yard maintenance/landscaping
o Snow removal
o Winterization
o Gutter cleaning
o Pressure washing
o Carpet removal & replacement
o Tile/Floor repairs
o Painting
o Sheetrock/drywall repairs
o Carpentry repairs
o Plumbing fixtures repairs & replacements
o Fire & mold remediation
o Fence repair

Here are a few things to consider when determining the extent of the services you want to offer:

A Contractors' License is generally not required for Foreclosure Cleanup Company but is likely required for preservation companies doing work over a certain dollar value (usually $500 - $1000+). Sometimes this license can be obtained by attending a course and successfully passing a test whereas other states require previous, verifiable industry experience.

The insurance premiums tend to be higher on companies that offer preservation services as they are considered to be a "general contractor". However, the revenue potential is much higher as preservation services tend to run from a few thousand dollars upwards instead of $800 - $1500 for each cleanout.

Usually what people do is start out initially offering just the foreclosure cleanup services and then when things pick up, they'll add preservation items to the list of services they offer. This let's them get their foot in the door without having to spend a whole lot of money upfront when setting up their company.

Source the Right Equipment & Tools

The great thing about starting a foreclosure cleanup company is that the initial expenses are quite low as much of the equipment and tools needed for cleaning foreclosures can likely be found in your own garage:

o Cleaning chemicals (i.e. all purpose cleaner, disinfectant, toilet bowl cleaner, window cleaner)
o Cleaning supplies (broom, mop, scrub pads)
o Vacuum cleaner
o Garbage bags and shovels
o Work gloves and disposable plastic gloves
o Lawn mowers & lawn tools
o Wheelbarrow

For the smaller items you don't have on hand, check your local dollar store. Their prices can't be beat and they usually have the same chemicals and cleaning supplies as the other retailers. Once you start doing some volume, consider shopping for your supplies at Sam's Club or Costco to keep your expenses low.

You can also find used equipment in great shape (such as vacuums) by going around to your local Saturday morning garage/yard sales. If you have a "Re-Use" center or a Salvation Army, you may consider checking there also as they often have vacuums and other small equipment or yard tools for sale.

For hauling junk, you'll need some sort of trailer and a vehicle large enough to pull it. If you don't have a truck and a trailer, you can always borrow a friend's truck and rent a trailer from U-Haul or just go ahead and rent a moving truck from U-Haul. (Remember though, that you'll be charged a daily rate plus a per-mile rate when you rent a moving truck whereas if you use your own truck and just rent the pull-trailer, you'll only incur the daily rental rate for the trailer.)

Sometimes you'll be required to clean a property that doesn't have electricity or water. In the event that there's no electricity, you'll need a generator to operate the vacuum cleaners and other electrical equipment. These can be rented at Lowe's or Home Depot and is a much better alternative to purchasing one outright unless you're going to use it on a regular basis (a new one will run you about $500+).
To save on expenses, it's best to rent equipment in the beginning.

Once you get up and going, it may be worth looking into purchasing equipment of your own. Check the online classifieds ads (such as Craigslist, Kijiji and Backpage) for used trailers, generators, etc. You should also check with U-Haul as they have been selling some of their excess trucks as of late.

Stay Safe on the Job

As a business owner, you're responsible for keeping your staff safe while working on the job. Working safely is paramount to the health of your staff and the reputation of your business (and also keeps your insurance premiums low). It's imperative that you review safety issues prior to allowing anyone to work on the job - you must provide both classroom and on-the-job safety training to all new hires.

Now, it doesn't have to be anything fancy; you can spend 20 - 30 minutes reviewing safety policies, safe working practices and answering any questions and then you'll be done! Make sure you have people sign in and out of the meeting and that you document that a safety meeting took place.

It's also very important that you become familiar with OSHA and Safety Standards as well as the health & safety hazards associated with this industry so that you can keep your staff safe, avoid accidents and costly fines. You can find the OSHA Pocket Guide to Construction Safety (it's a short and an easy read) at the main website (OSHA DOT gov) by searching for the report name.

Another way to protect your staff and your business is to make sure that you check references before you hire someone. Insist that they list non-related references (i.e. not mother, sister or best friend) and instead list references of previous employers or someone they know in a professional capacity. We also do drug testing and background checks - it might sound paranoid to some, but the safety of our staff, our customers' property and our company's reputation is far too important to risk not spending $20 on a background check or drug test.

Price Your Services Right

In this industry, the lowest price always wins the bid (unless, of course, the lowest bidder has a terrible track record of not completing work and is utterly irresponsible and unprofessional, in which case the company has just committed "reputation-suicide" and will never be hired again). Lenders don't want to spend any more than they have to on these properties so you want to make sure you price your services comparable with the going market rates (but at the same time, priced so that you still make a great profit and don't leave any money on the table).

For cleaning out foreclosures, most banks expect to spend anywhere from $500 - $1500 for a cleanout (trashout, interior clean and initial landscape cleanup), but it could be a bit more or a bit less, depending on your area. It's important to know that most lenders have prescribed "price caps" for the maximum amounts that they'll pay for services.

If you're also providing preservation services, a great site that we've used before to determine our prices for doing repairs is www.CostEstimator.com for getting the market rates for construction costs - you can get a free 30 day trial (no need to enter credit card - it really is free!). There are over 3,000 cost items adjusted for over 210 local, geographic regions to create your bid and you can add as many others as needed. If you want to sign up after the trial, it's only $15/month.

Market Your Services

It's true - "nothing happens until somebody sells something"... and you'll need to get out there and sell, sell, sell your business. Once you've done a few jobs, you'll find that word of mouth advertising and referrals will provide a large pool of new jobs for you, but in the meantime, you do need to do everything possible to let customers know you exist.

A large portion of work will come from the relationships that you build with Real Estate Agents ("Realtors") who list bank-owned homes (often referred to as REO listings). They are often given the task of bidding out the cleaning and repairs of new listings by the asset management company so you'll want to make sure the agents in your area know your company handles this type of work.

A great way to find out which Realtors in your area list REOs is to go online to the major bank's REO websites and "data mine" the contact information for the listing agents (name, email, phone numbers). It can be painstaking work, but definitely worth it.

Here's an example of a bank REO sites to get you started collecting Realtor information

WELLS FARGO (Properties managed by Premier Asset Services): pasreo.com/pasreo/images/pas_logo.jpg

NOTE: In order to access agent information, select the state and click search. Then, individually select each listing and click on "Print Property Report CVS". Each listing and corresponding information (such as agent name, phone # and email) will be created in an Excel spreadsheet. You can access the page

Remember to follow up with a phone call a few days later. Don't be shy about asking the Realtor if he/she has any jobs for you to bid, either - most of them are very accommodating and willing to give a new company the opportunity to provide estimates.

The other way jobs are bid out is through large Asset Management Companies (also referred to as Marketing & Management Companies, REO Field Service Companies and Property Management Companies). Essentially, the lender says, "ok - I have thousands of properties to get rid of. Here, national ABC Asset Management Company: clean, fix and sell these properties for us". And the national Asset Management Company will then subcontract out the work to local foreclosure cleanup and property preservation companies. In order to work for these companies, you usually need to sign up your company as a potential vendor. Many times this can be done online.

There are both positives and negatives associated with working for the larger companies. On the positive side, you will probably be given a few projects to work on at a time so you will be kept relatively busy. On the negative side, they usually want you to offer 'wholesale pricing' and don't pay until 30 - 60 days after you invoice them for the work. Working for one of these companies, however, will give you the experience you need to go after more work.

Other possible customers include wholesale property investors (groups of investors that purchase foreclosed homes at the auctions and then sell them to smaller investors at a wholesale price), investors, landlords, property management companies, Realtors and so on.

You should also consider attending your local networking events such as the Chamber of Commerce meetings and any local investor meetings in order to hand out your card and network with potential customers. The more you get out there, the better chance you'll have of securing some great, long-term customers!

This is definitely an exciting industry and a very profitable one for those of you who don't mind getting your hands a bit dirty! Good luck!
